There should be no loosening of the marriage bond as there is today in the Western world, but at the same time we should not draw the rein tighter than Scripture does. God would not look for his people to do differently than himself. We are to be imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1/2) - see the way God dealt with Israel above. There is the danger of reacting against the looseness of the present day and going off into the opposite extreme. The questions we should ask ourselves are firstly: "What does Christ enjoin ?" (John 14:15), secondly, where he has left us no commandment: "What is the teaching of his apostles ?" (Acts 2:42), and thirdly, where there is no injunction at all: "What would love do, for love is the whole law ?" (Romans 13:10). See 1 Corinthians 7. As to (1) see verse 10, as to (2) see verses 12 & 17, and as to (3) see verse 25.
