time when it was waste and empty and darkness covered the face of the deep, as well as the time when God
created the light and separated it from the darkness. The justification for this explanation is that it brings
everything in Genesis 1 within the six days of creation mentioned in Exodus 20:11.
The objections to this theory could well be:-
(1) It makes God create the earth waste and empty which Isaiah 45:18 specifically states he did not.
(2) All the following five days begin with the words "and God said". It is possible that the first day is an
exception, but I am not aware of any reason why it should be. There is an "and God said" before the
creation of light, which is where I believe the first day begins.
(3) It does not give us any reason why the earth was waste and empty, why darkness covered the face of the
deep or why the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
(4) It effectively makes two creations of the heavens; once in verse 1 and then again in verses 6 to 8.
Similarly, it makes two creations of the earth; once in verse 1 and then again in verses 9 and 10.
