Stepping Stones

It is interesting to note that some things that appear in the Old Testament historical books and have a prominent place in the New Testament reach us via passages in the Psalms or prophets. The intervening passages are like stepping stones.

Cases that one has noticed are set out below.

(1) (a) In Genesis 1:26-30 we have Man set over God’s creation.

(b) In Psalm 8:3-9 we have the passage in Genesis 1 spoken of, but at the same time we have not only man referred to but also man’s son (verse 4).

(c) In Hebrews 2:5-10 we have the Psalm taken up and applied to Christ, the Son of man.

What this tells us is that whereas Adam failed in his headship, Christ has been shown to be worthy to be over the work of God’s hands. Christ is the Son of man (Matthew 26:64 and many other passages). The importance of the passage is seen in that it is also quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:27 and in Ephesians 1:22.

(2) (a) In Exodus 4:22/23 we have Israel spoken of as God’s son.

(b) In Hosea 11:1 we have the statement: “Out of Egypt I called my son”

(c) In the New Testament we find that Matthew quotes the passage in Hosea and shows that it applied to Christ who went down into Egypt and then back to Galilee (Matthew 2:15).

Here we have Christ as Son of God taking the place of Israel who failed. The passage in Hosea supplies the link between Israel in Exodus and Christ.

(3) (a) In Genesis 14:18-24 we have Melchisedec the priest of the Most High God spoken of.

(b) In Psalm 110: 4 we have Christ spoken of as a priest after the order of Melchisedec.

(c) In Hebrews 7 the writer shows that the Levitical priesthood has been set aside and that now Christ is High Priest after the Melchisedec order.

Were it not for the prophetic Psalm we would not have known that the Son of God would be a High Priest after Melchisedec’s order.
