The point is covering (see the passage we are considering in 1 Corinthians 11). Whether that covering should be a veil, hat or headscarf is not really significant, provided it is adequate for the intended purpose. A hat does not usually cover all the hair and this may be why in days gone by it was often the practice for a woman to do her hair up in a bun - effectively it was covered, that is, not left on show. |
|
One of the reasons for the covering is to distinguish man from woman. The two are not to be confused; hence a woman is not to wear man’s clothing (Deuteronomy 22:5). (If it is normal, as in some cultures, for a man to wear a skirt, then a woman should wear something else such as trousers. The point is that the sexes should be distinguishable by their dress.) The idea of unisex is not of God and no doubt has in many cases a lot to do with the breakdown of marriages today. |

We cannot put the world right, but in the assembly (Christian assembly) we can show the way and seek to do what is pleasing to the Lord, which is of course the way that in the long run must be the most beneficial to everyone. |

Paul’s instructions are based on headship (see verse 3). When Paul says: “Every man... having [anything] on his head, puts his head to shame” the second use of the word head would appear to refer to the man’s head, that is, Christ. He should not cover himself in the presence of his head. However a woman should not cover herself in the presence of her own head (her husband), but in the presence of others. The woman is to be exclusively for her husband. (Nuns who take the veil show thereby that they are to be exclusively for Christ) Note that man and husband are the same word in the original and also woman and wife. On this basis some think that a covering should only be worn by a married woman. I would say as to this - over to you: I do not know the answer ! The question is: are we seeking the truth or reading Scripture |
