again before they received the Spirit (Acts 19:1-8). One understands, incidentally, that the Spirit is a seal from 2 Corinthians 1:21/22.

The object of the foregoing thoughts is to promote exercise as to the subject considered which is a very important one in Paul’s writings particularly, and the failure to take it into account in our thinking can lead to a mass of error. For instance, Paul says: “If ye have died with Christ from the elements of the world, why as [if] alive in [the] world do ye subject yourselves to ordinances ?” (Colossians 2:20). The elements of the world are its elementary parts, not physically but morally. They are in contrast to “the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God” (Hebrews 5:12). It is not the advanced things but what we today would call the basics. If we are wrong as to the basics we will find ourselves defective everywhere - we will be building on a faulty foundation.
