saying what he did he recognised that Christ was under authority. Christ was, as the seed of David, the one who did God’s will (Acts 13: 22:23). Often Christ refers to Himself as doing the will of God his Father (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38).

Apart from serving God He took up the position of a servant to his disciples: “I am in the midst of you as the one that serves” (Luke 22:27). He washed his disciples’ feet (John 13: 1-15). Christ was setting the disciples an example. (We know from Luke 22 that the disciples even at the Passover meal were in strife as to who should be held to be the greatest.) Maybe this is what is referred to in the prophet; “Man acquired me [as bondman] from my youth” (Zechariah 13:5). The following verses shows that the passage is prophetic of Christ..

We, as Christ, should do God’s will (1 Peter 4:2). We however are not in the same situation as Christ or his apostles. It would I believe be presumption for us to claim that we are bondmen of God and Christ in the way that the apostles did (Romans 1:1, Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:1; James 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1 and Jude 1:1). Christ gave to his bondmen the authority (Mark 13:34). We could not claim that. Apart from serving God we should, as Christ did, “serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).
